The McLaren Elva was born from racing , and in fact its philosophy is taken from the sports cars created by Bruce McLaren in the 1960s. With no physical border between outside and inside, the occupants enjoy the comfort of the air on their faces, but without a doubt, they receive a unique experience that cannot be lived with many models in the world. The use of a helmet is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended.
Elva belongs to the McLaren ultimate series along with the F1, P1, Senna, and Speedtail. Closely related to the Senna, this roofless supercar is one of the most exclusive in the world, with production limited to 149 units.
Engine and Performance
Elva comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which can generate a power of 804 hp and a torque of 590 lb-ft. All that rush of power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. With this power and extremely low weight, the performance is exceptional, as you can imagine. Elva has a top speed of 203 mph and can reach 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds.
How can you travel at those speeds without a windshield? The Elva comes with an Active Air Management System (AAMS) and also includes a handy kit with goggles, gloves and a helmet. Optionally, McLaren will offer a fixed windscreen as an option in most markets, for those customers who do not want such open-air driving.
Active Air Management System (AAMS)
Lacking a roof, let alone a windscreen to protect occupants from the elements, McLaren has developed an Active Air Management System (AAMS) . Automatically activated when it picks up speed, this system channels the air that enters through an opening in the front and returns it upwards just in front of the passenger compartment to create an air curtain that isolates the occupants.
A small carbon fiber spoiler rises from the front of the hood when the AAMS is active to direct air, which is diverted through several carbon fiber fins across the hood.
When not active, at low speeds, the airflow is diverted to two low-temperature radiators to increase efficiency. McLaren claims that the radiators improve performance by cooling the oil in the seven-speed automatic transmission.
McLaren claims that with AAMS technology helmets are not required. Still, it is recommended. No matter how powerful the generated air curtain is, it cannot handle the rubber chips, small stones and other dirt that jump from the tires of other users and that will end up in the hands and faces of the driver and his passenger.
In the passenger compartment of the McLaren Elva we find a modern cabin, in line with the latest releases from the British firm. The carbon steering wheel, the fully digital cockpit or the 8-inch touch screen for the infotainment system in an upright position are elements like those that equip the McLaren street models. Also the design of the central console, minimalist and with very few switches, is inspired by its current range of products.
